Summary

The idea that everyone needs to buy every item they need, even if it is only for one use, contributes to manufacturing pollution and waste. Why not save money and use a library of things instead?

Description

A library of things, also known as a share library or tool library, works like a regular library but includes items other than books, such as tools, toys, camping gear, and even kitchen gadgets. They are there for lending instead of buying or renting.

If we plan to use a durable item for a limited time, why buy it? Sharing things instead of buying new saves a lot of money and space in our homes. Plus there is less extraction of materials from natural resources, less manufacturing, and less transportation, which leads to less climate pollution.

Take a look at the websites of libraries of things in Chicago and Brisbane to get a sense of how these libraries work and the types of items that are available.

Tips

Search online to see if a library of things is nearby.

• You can also look at the Local Tools library finder to see if there is one near you.

• The hardest item to check out is always the first one. Give it a try with something simple to learn the process and how your library works. It only gets easier from there!

• These libraries often have repair cafés, tool workshops, gardening events, kids events, social gatherings, and other things to benefit from.
