Description
Breastmilk for babies is as natural as it gets. Consider using a more sustainable option to store it.
Glass bottles, stainless steel containers, and reusable bags are great alternatives to the single-use plastic often used to store breast milk. Whatever the material, the key thing is to get something reusable. While these options are a little more expensive up front, being reusable means cost savings in the long run and less plastic in landfills.
Tips
• If going with glass, consider using single serving sizes to reduce waste if milk is not used all at once. When freezing, leave space for expansion to prevent the glass from breaking.
• Stainless steel containers are another option that are durable and hygienic. Be sure to choose food-grade, airtight stainless steel containers.
• If going with a bag or pouch form, be sure to choose thick, food-grade options that can withstand freezing and thawing. Some come with measurement markings, which makes it easier to portion milk, or come in various colors, which can be used just for fun or as part of a system to indicate when the milk was pumped.
