Description
Have some errands to run, like getting the groceries or picking up a few things? Or perhaps you are going to visit a friend or getting something to eat? If it is within walking distance, consider ditching the car and walking instead!
Walking is a great bonus way to get some low-intensity exercise into your day while reducing pollution. Many people say they just feel better from getting out and walking more often.
By not using a car, you also save some money and will likely feel a deeper connection to where you live. It is incredible how much more we notice when walking. Plus, there is no stress from parking or dealing with other drivers!
Tips
• Not a big walker now? No worries. Do not overdo it at first and ease in. Start small and your body will likely adapt for the better.
• Wondering how to remind yourself to walk more often? Keep a good pair of walking shoes by the front door. Also, think ahead about the specific places that you regularly go to that are a reasonable walking distance.
• To make your outing better, consider bringing along a bag to carry things, some water, or listening to music or a good podcast.
• If you need to carry a lot coming back from shopping, a backpack to distribute the weight across your shoulders and back makes a big difference.
• Think about walking when going somewhere with friends or family. The more the merrier! Not to mention, it is nice to have company on the way.
