Summary

Barbecues are a great way to get together with friends and family, but they can have a significant environmental footprint. Consider making them more sustainable and enjoyable by trying fun new foods and ditching single-use utensils.

Description

There are many approaches to making a barbecue (BBQ) more sustainable and enjoyable.

First, as we have highlighted in other actions, transitioning to a more plant-based diet is one of the most effective ways to slow climate change, rein in habitat loss, and regenerate the health of our planet. This is extremely relevant when talking about BBQs.

For example, cooking 10 meat-based hamburgers (1.5 kg) can generate over 40 kg of CO2 emissions. By comparison, grilling 1.5 kg of bell peppers filled with cheese generates less than 10 kg of CO2 emissions. Beef has the largest impact, so when planning your next BBQ, consider skipping the cow or even all meat from the menu.

Switching from charcoal to gas cooking is another way to reduce your climate pollution. Or even better, make the switch to an electric grill, which is becoming more common.

If you really want to try something new, then consider a solar oven. It takes a little longer, but the energy is free and it becomes a topic of conversation.

Also consider the plates, tableware, tablecloths, napkins, and decor. Avoid single-use paper and plastic where you can, and head towards re-usable utensils and plates. It saves you a bit of money and makes for a classier get-together as well!

Tips

• Not ready to give up meat completely just yet? No problem! Swap out the beef for pork or chicken instead as less impactful options.

• There is no shortage of ideas online to help you build the menu for your next BBQ.

• Source the food itself from local, regenerative farms if possible.

• You will learn as you go and incorporate new and better ways to have a BBQ. Do not feel like it needs to be perfect. Progress, not perfection!
