Description

Artificial intelligence may feel intangible, but each request runs through physical data centers that use electricity, use water for cooling, and depend on manufactured hardware. Training AI models has an environmental impact, and so does using them after they are built.

Not all AI tasks have the same footprint. A short text response generally requires much less energy than complex reasoning, image generation, or video generation. The IEA reports that energy-intensive AI tasks can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per request than simple text generation. It projects that global data-center electricity use will roughly double in the coming years.

It is also important to keep the impact in perspective. A university-led independent analysis estimated that the carbon pollution emissions from 500 AI exchanges produce comparable pollution to driving one mile in a gasoline car, though complex reasoning, image generation, and video cause relatively more pollution.

AI also has a growing water footprint. Many data centers evaporate water to cool servers, while the power plants supplying their electricity consume even more. A Berkeley Lab report estimated that data centers consumed 900 billion liters of water. While that evaporated water mostly comes back to Earth as rain, the impact can be serious locally, especially in water-stressed areas.

The goal is not to avoid useful AI or feel guilty about every prompt. Instead, use it intentionally and reduce low-value requests that can easily be handled another way.

Tips

• Consider Climate-Conscious Options: Ecosia AI uses a smaller model and generates more clean energy than its AI features consume. GreenPT runs on renewable-powered infrastructure.

• Pause Before You Prompt: Ask whether AI will meaningfully help with the task. A calculator, standard search, spelling tool, or your own knowledge may be enough.

• Make One Prompt Count: Provide the necessary context and desired format in your first request. Combine related questions when practical and avoid repeatedly generating similar answers.

• To get started, consider choosing one change to try for a week, such as trying a more sustainable AI tool, using a standard search for simple questions, or skipping an unnecessary AI-generated image.
