Earth Quaker Action Team, EQAT (pronounced "equate"), is a grassroots, nonviolent direct action group fighting for climate and social justice. EQAT's actions confront those who benefit from our current energy system, boldly challenging them to turn away from fossil fuels. One of their current campaigns is against Vanguard, which is a top investor in fossil fuels. They are anchored in Quaker histories of speaking truth to power. EQAT uses nonviolent direct action because it works; direct action has been crucial to the success of every major social movement during the last century. Direct action allows citizens to boldly challenge power and highlight injustice. As Dr. Martin Luther King elaborates in Letter From a Birmingham Jail, "nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue." They actively organize with Quakers, alongside others who share their vision, to take action for climate and social justice. EQAT is open to Quakers and people of diverse beliefs who are aligned with their values. Get started by signing up to receive e-mail updates and following them on social media. Check out their upcoming events and volunteer opportunities! In-person events tend to be in the Philadelphia area. They have virtual events as well.
