Ende Gelände is a nonviolent civil disobedience movement that occupies coal mines to raise awareness about the climate emergency and demand a rapid transition to renewable energy. They're comprised of an alliance of people from grassroots climate action groups, large environmental organisations, political groups, and other networks. Members of Ende Gelände share the belief that we can't rely on politicians or corporations and that civil disobedience is needed to drive system change. They also believe that green growth alone is not realistic so we need to transition to a sustainable, regenerative economic system. Ende Gelände has been organizing mass civil disobedience actions against coal mines in Rhineland, Lusatia, and Leipzig since 2015. They have also participated in civil disobedience protests against coal mining and fracking in Poland, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. Get started by following them on social media and signing up for their newsletter. You can also join or start a local group.
