Established in 2007, Fashion Takes Action is a Canadian non-profit organization that advances sustainability, ethics, and circularity throughout the fashion system. The fashion industry is facing many challenges, including but not limited to: the use of pesticides and fertilizers to grow cotton; highly toxic chemicals used to process and treat fabric; sweatshops and unfair labour practices; enormous amounts of water required to make clothing; and the fast fashion frenzy that is contributing to the growing number of textiles that end up in landfills. There are many ways for fashion to become sustainable. Fashion Takes Action works with those who make, sell, buy, wear, dispose, reuse, repair, rent and recycle clothes. Their role is to remove barriers to sustainability through education, awareness, research and collaboration. Their programs focus on reusing clothing, holding conferences with major global players in the fashion industry, educating youth and businesses about the environmental impacts of fashion, and making fashion circular. Get started by signing up to recieve their newsletter and following them on social media. Also check out their resources and educational materials, the 7R’s of Fashion Pledge, and upcoming events.
