Quercus - Associação Nacional de Conservação da Natureza (National Association for Nature Conservation) is a Portuguese non-profit environmental organization. It's headquartered in Monsanto Forest Park, in Lisbon. Founded in 1985, the name Quercus was used because the Oak is one a common species in Portugal that is becoming increasingly rare. Quercus has over 20 local groups spread throughout Portugal and their campaigns include reducing waste, increasing drinking water quality and availability, land conservation, phasing out fossil fuels, protecting biodiversity, and sustainable tourism. Quercus mostly focuses on environmental issues in Portugal but also on global management of the water and air. They take legal action in Portugal and European courts to protect the environment. Residents and organizations in Portugal are encouraged to join Quercus.
